Menopausal symptoms such as fatigue, hot flashes, irritability, forgetfulness and vaginal dryness are found among all women and are due to a drop in female hormones: estrogen and progesterone.
Many of the unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause are not simply due to hormonal shifts, but rather to poor lifestyle habits that include high stress levels, poor nutrition, and inadequate exercise. The severity of these symptoms is directly due to the amount of estrogen we are exposed to during our lives. When we are stressed-out and drinking large amounts of coffee, progesterone is converted into cortisol to help maintain our fight or flight mechanism. This causes estrogen dominance, again adding to the severity of menopausal symptoms. It is also important to note that estrogen is stored in fat. Diets low in animal fat accompanied by moderate exercise decrease the amount of fat stored in our bodies, which liberates estrogens to be filtered through our liver and excreted, lowering menopausal symptoms.
